Tendon Reflexes

  • One, Two – Buckle my shoe – S1/S2 = ankle reflex
  • Three, Four – Kick the door – L3/L4 = Knee jerk
  • Five, Six – Pick Up Sticks – C5/C5 = Biceps
  • Seven, Eight – Shut the Gate – C7/C8 = Triceps

Dermatomes

  • C1 – motor only no sensory
  • C2 – A helmet with a strap is the area – no clever way to remember it just think the first sensory is C2 which is the helmet
  • C4 – Necklace area
  • C6 – make an “OK” sign with your left hand – it makes a 6 – everything you can see – the thumb, the index and half the middle is C6 –
  • C7 – middle finger
  • C8 –
  • The thoracic (T) dermatomes make a T with the upper limbs of the T being the T1 dermatome – (when a patient holds hands out like on a crucifix)  going down the medial arm – the other T’s are on the body
  • T4 = Level of nipple (“T4 = Teat Pore”)
  • T10 = Umbilicus (T10 BellybuTEN”)
  • L1 = Inguinal Ligament between ASIS & Pubic Symphasis (L1 = IL)
  • L4 = Knees; (L4 hits the floor – when kneeling!)
  • L5 = Big Toe (L5 – Largest of Five)
  • S1 = Smallest Toe (S1 – Smallest One)
  • S5 = anus (S5 Is the Doodie hive)

Femoral Nerve is derived from L2, L3, L4

Sciatic nerve is derived form L4, L5, S1, S2, S3
