Pancreatic Carcinoma

  • Chronic pancreatitis is a risk factor (acute is not)
  • Courvoiserier’s law: in jaundice, an enlarged gallbladder a more likely to be carcinoma of the pancreas or lower biliary tree than gallstones
  • More common in smokers
  • More common in men
  • Most commonly it’s head of pancreas
  • Carcinoma of the ampulla has a better outlook as there is relatively early jaundice so small – more treatable – tumours are identified earlier
