Following an update by MHRA (Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency) in 2009, there’s been a change in regulation of over the counter meds aimed at children with coughs/colds.
The affected the following
- Cough Suppressants: Dextromethorphan and pholcodine
- Expectorants: guaifenesin and ipecacuanha
- Nasal Decongestants: ephedrine, oxymetazoline, phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine and xylometazoline
- Antihistamines: Bromphneiramine, cholphenamine, diphenhydramine, doxylamine, promethazine, triprolidine
Products with these ingredients should be avoided in kids under 6yrs.
For kids age 6-12yrs, these will only be available following discussion with the pharmacist.
