Lung Cancer

  • Diet rich in fresh fruit and veg reduces risk of lung cancer in smokers
  • Uk average is 64.1 sufferers per 100,000 – in Northern Ireland this is 50.6, but Scotland is the highest rate of new cases – probably related to diet smoking and previous shipbuilding industry
  • Lung Ca is rare below aged 40
  • Incidence increase rapidly after age 40 peaking around 75-84 year olds
  • Most (85%) are over 60yrs

In Males Common cancers:

  1. Prostate
  2. Lung

In females:

  1. Breast
  2. Bowel
  3. Lung.
  • After smoking radon exposure is the second most common cause of lung cancer
  • Smokers are 15 times more likely to die from lung cancer than non smokers.

Smoking is linked to all forms of lung cancer but adenocarcinoma is most common cancer seen in non-smokers
