Legionnaire’s Disease

  • Caused by gram negative bacillus Legionella Pneumophila
  • It is usually acquired from infected water supplies in cooling towers/air conditioning unitls
  • Only 5% of cases of exposure acquire the disease
  • Elderly, smokers, those with pre-existing chest disease acquire most often
  • Flu-like symptoms
    • high fever (usually about 40C)
    • Myalgia
    • Confusion
  • Treatment is Ciprofloxacin / macrolides
  • Mortality is low if treated – untreated mortality is 15-20%
