Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma

Optic neuropathy due to (in the majority) raised intraocular pressure (IOP).

Actually a small minority, with raised IOP don’t have glaucoma and  small minority with glaucoma don’t have raised IOP.

Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma (POAG) aka chronic simple glaucoma is present in around 2% of people over 40yrs.

Risk factors for POAG:

  • age
  • family history
  • black patient
  • myopia (short sighted)
  • hypertension
  • diabetes mellitus


  • Often insidious onset
  • peripheral visual field loss
  • Decreased visual acuity
  • optic disc cupping
