Common Drug Side Effects

Cardiovascular drugs

Bendroflumethiazide:

  • hypercalcaemia.
  • Hypokalaemia
  • Hyponatraemia
  • Hyperuricaemia–>Uric acid stone formation. (But can be beneficial in calcium stones as reduced urinary calcium)
  • Erectile dysfunction

ACE-I

  • persistent troublesome cough.
  • Deteriorating Renault function in renal artery stenosis

Spironolactone and Candasartan can cause hyperkalaemia

  • Digoxin Toxicity:
    • Nausea
    • Vomiting
    • Xanthopsia (Yellow discolouration of the vision)

Amiodarone –

  • can cause corneal deposits
  • can cause all sorts of thyroid problemsAtenolol:
    • brochospasm – avoid in asthma

Antibiotics

Chloramphenicol

  • Causes aplastic anaemia in 1 in 1000 users – so it’s not used often systemically!

Nitrofurantoin

  • Peripheral Neuropathy

Rifampicin

  • Red staining of urine / sweat / tears

Gentamicin

  • Nephrotixicity by acute tubular necrosis
  • Ototixicity – sensorineural deafness

Tetracycline

  • Dental staining in the fetus if administered to the mother

 


Others

Methysergide (used in migraine / headache prophylaxis)

  • Causes retroperitoneal fibrosis

 

Ribavirin

  • Used in treatment of Hep C
  • Most common side effects are:
    • Haemolytic anaemia
    • Cough
    • Nausea
    • Weight loss
  • Can also cause
    • Peptic ulceration
    • Interstitial pneumonitis

Interferon Alpha

  • fatigue / fever / flu-like symptoms / poor appetite
  • Leucopaenia and thrombocytopenia
  • anziety and depression
  • Nausea and vomiting

Antipsychotics

  • Hyperprolactinaemia
